The Botanical Center Plants | 21 Plants Associated with Female Health
Over the course of the entire P50 project, the UIC Botanical Center has studied 20 different botanicals, many of them extensively. All plants have a scientific track record and documented use as dietary supplements for women’s health. The following four plants were investigated most intensively by all three Center Projects and four Center Cores.
- Actaea racemosa L. (Black Cohosh)
- Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (Licorice; glabra species)
- Humulus lupulus L. (Hops)
- Trifolium pratense L. (Red Clover)
For these four plants, chemically and biologically standardized botanical products were developed and used in three Phase I , one Phase II, and three Herb-Drug Interaction clinical trials. Furthermore, the following plants were studied in detail with regard to their phytochemical composition, their biological activity profiles, and the ADME properties of their constituents:
- Angelica sinensis L. (Dang Gui)
- Dioscorea villosa THUNB. (Wild Yam)
- Glycyrrhiza inflata L. (Licorice; inflata species)
- Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. ex DC (Licorice; uralensis species)
- Piscidia erythrina L. (Jamaican Dogwood)
- Pueraria mirifica L. (Kwao Keur)
- Rhodiola rosea L. (Roseroot)
- Silybum marianum L. (Milk Thistle)
- Valeriana officinalis L. (Valerian)
- Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry)
- Viburnum opulus L. (Guelder Rose)
- Viburnum prunifolium L. (Blackhaw)
- Vitex agnus-castus L. (Chasteberry)
Finally, the following plants were studied for as part of the evaluation of complex, multi-component botanicals:
- Asclepias tuberosa L. (Butterfly Milkweed)
- Chamaelirium luteum (L.) A. GRAY (Fairywand)
- Gentiana lutea L. (Gentian)
- Taraxacum officinale WEBER (Dandelion)
