Farnsworth, who was one of the College's most dedicated pharmacy educators and internationally renowned, transformational pharmacognosy researchers. His scientific and educational contributions relate to the chemistry, biology, and therapeutic properties of medicinal plants and natural products. The Farnsworth Lecture is hosted annually by the UIC Pharmacognosy Institute on behalf of the UIC Retzky College of Pharmacy (see History of Farnsworth Lectures since 2013).
The 13th Farnsworth Lecture will be held on August 21, 2025 (12:30 CT/13:30 ET/11:30MT/10:30 PT; 19:30 CET; UTC-6h; see world time zone map here), by Dr. Robert Verpoorte from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands. The title of the lecture will be announced as soon as it becomes available.
Background information about the Lecturer
- Robert Verpoorte is Professor Emeritus of Pharmacognosy in the Section Plant Sciences at the Institute of Biology Leiden. His natural products laboratory has studied various aspects of natural products such as the isolation and identification biological active compounds, their biosynthesis, and metabolic engineering of relevant biosynthetic pathways. The development of metabolomics and the natural deep eutectic solvents have been his more recent major interests. Dr. Verpoorte's work resulted in more than 800 publications, 6 patents, and 3 books. His publication portfolio places him is among the 1% most cited authors (Clarivate, Web of Science), and the Stanford University ranking of scientists places him on position 45 out of the top-2% (134,814) of authors in the field of chemistry (99.99933 percentile).
