Download iCal FileThe collegiate Farnsworth Lectureship in Pharmacognosy is hosted in memory of Norman R. Farnsworth, who was one of the College's most dedicated pharmacy educators and internationally renowned, transformational pharmacognosy researchers. His scientific and educational contributions relate to the chemistry, biology, and therapeutic properties of medicinal plants and natural products. The Farnsworth Lecture is hosted annually by the UIC Pharmacognosy Institute on behalf of the UIC College of Pharmacy (see History of Farnsworth Lectures since 2013).
The 11th Farnsworth Lecture will be held on August 22, 2024 (12:30 CT/13:30 ET/11:30MT/10:30 PT; 19:30 CET; UTC-6h; see world time zone map here), by Dr. Jean-Luc Wolfender from the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Geneva, CMU, 1211 Geneva, Switzerland. The title of Dr. Wolfender's lecture will be "Nature Meets Technology: A Revolution for Pharmacognosy?:
Background information about the Lecturer
- Jean‐Luc Wolfender is Professor at the University of Geneva where he leads the phytochemistry bioactive natural product (PBNP) group. Since the 1990s, Dr.Wofeldender has introduced LC-MS and LC-NMR methods for the profiling of natural extracts, improved dereplication, and acceleration of the discovery of novel bioactive compounds. He is currently developing innovative metabolomic approaches based on mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in various aspects of natural product research. His work includes LC-MS computational approaches for data mining with a focus on generic assessment of the composition of natural extracts that are used therapeutically and as dietary supplements. His research focuses on the discovery of NP-based drugs, evidence-based phytotherapy, and new NP that can be induced in response to biological stimuli.
