SUMMARY:2022 Spring Roundtable: Plants for Human Health | Seminar & Open Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Spring 2022 Pharmacognosy Roundtable is a 2-hour event (11a-1p CT) that starts off with a presentation by Dr. Maique Weber Biavatti from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, in Florianópolis, Brazil. This is followed by an open discussion with specific and broader questions evolving from her presentation topic: "Salad, Quercetin, or a Little More: What Benefits Human Health?"    Prof. Biavatti is a full-time faculty and investigator at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the Laboratory of Pharmacognosy at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil. In her presentation, Prof. Biavatti will discuss some of her recent work on metabolomic analysis among ten traditional ?Arnicas? (Asteraceae) from Brazil (see https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jep.2020.113149) as well as a critical review of the clinical efficacy of Bauhinia forficata Link (pata-de-vaca) as adjuvant treatment in type-2 diabetes patients (see https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jep.2021.114616). This will serve as basis for roundtable discussions about the role of natural products in the healthcare systems of modern (Western) societies.    Prof. Biavatti will also bring to our attention some of the issues and opportunities present to pharmacognosy research in Brazil.
